In addition to being one of the biggest horse racing events in the United Kingdom, Royal Ascot is one of the oldest sporting institutions in the world. 3645w
The meeting dates back to 1711, when Queen Anne discovered a clearing near Windsor Castle that she declared would be a good place for horses “to gallop at full stretch”.
Her Majesty’s Plate was run during August for the grand prize of 100 guineas and the meeting has since grown into a five-day horse racing extravaganza.
To celebrate the 2019 edition of the historic meeting, Betway has produced a superb animated video detailing some of the most important events that have taken place since Royal Ascot was born.

With over 300 years between Queen Anne’s discovery and the present day, it comes as no surprise that there have been plenty of noteworthy events over the past three centuries.
The first modern Olympics weren’t held until 1896, some 185 years after the first royal race was staged.
Royal Ascot also pre-dates two world wars, the birth of Test cricket and the technological revolution, highlighting its status as one of the most important events in the sporting calendar.
This year’s meeting will be broadcast in over 200 countries, with a reach of 650 million households around the world.
More than 300,000 people will make their way to Berkshire to watch the sport’s best trainers, jockeys and owners compete for over £7 million in prize money. With eight Group One races and 19 Group races in total, Royal Ascot is quite simply a sporting event not to be missed.
