Now the second biggest racecourse in Scotland, Musselburgh was only saved from closure in 1991 by East Lothian Council who managed to turn its fortunes around and invest in new facilities.

In 2012 an all-weather strip was added to the track to stop the bends getting chopped up.

In 2020 it signed an agreement for Chester Race Company (also responsible for Chester and Bangor-on-Dee Racecourses) to take over the management and operation of Musselburgh Racecourse for an initial 10-year period.
